If I live in Thessaloniki, what are the words and speeches that go through me from morning to evening? The Encyclopédie de la parole travels from city to city, inviting local collectors to try and answer this question. Formulations, melodies, accents, tones and other language phenomena are captured on the go, in the street as well as at work, at home, on public transports, on the telephone, on television, on the Internet... Transcribed to be reproduced by a group of local performers capable of "replaying" everything at the request of the audience, who chooses the order and the themes, these recordings resonate with one another to form a different performance each day. After Paris, St. Petersburg, Rome, Cagliari, Conakry, Geneva and Ouagadougou, Jukebox comes to send the tongues wagging on the banks of the Aegean Sea.

L'Encyclopédie de la parole

L'Encyclopédie de la parole is an artistic project exploring the spoken word in all its forms. Since September 2007, Encyclopédie de la parole has been collecting various recordings and indexing them according to specific phenomena that make up how people speak as pacing, chorality, timbre, address, overemphasis, spacing, residue, saturation or melody. The Encyclopédie has dedicated an entry to each of these phenomena, all of which contain an explanatory notice and a set of audio examples. From this collection, including now more than a thousand documents freely available for audio consultation on its website, Encyclopédie de la parole makes use of these recordings to produce works of sound art, performances, shows, conferences, concerts and installations.The project is led by a collective of poets, actors, visual artists, ethnographers, musicians, curators, directors, choreographers, and radio show producers.

Its motto is: “We are all experts in speaking.”

Elise Simonet  
Following training in directing and dramaturgy in Bordeaux, Elise Simonet works alongside numerous artists, whether as dramaturg or artistic collaborator. As a member of the group l’Encyclopédie de la parole, her research touches orality and documentary recordings of speech within live art. She is the artistic collaborator on the Suites Chorales cycle (Suite n°1 ‘abc’ -2013 / Suite n°2 -2015 / Suite n°3 ‘Europe’ -2017 / Suite n°4 -2020) and co-signs Jukebox (Gennevilliers, St-Petersburg, Roma, Prato, Cagliari, Conakry -2019 / Bobigny, Nanterre, Malakoff -2020 / Chaux-de-Fond, Fribourg, Nyon, Geneva, Ouagadougou -2021). In 2015 and 2016 she co-programmed the le festival TJCC alongside Joris Lacoste at the Théâtre de Gennevilliers. Since 2017, she is developing a  project of conversations linked to a set of cards drawn by Léo Gobin: the first chapter Parler la musique is based on conversations with musicians and lyricists; the second chapter, Converser starts conversations with polyglots and questions languages, in their private and public use. (Brussels-2018, Fribourg-2019, Strasbourg-2022). As a dramaturg, she is invited to Cliniques Dramaturgiques by Jessie Mill at FTA Montreal, by Sarah Israel at PAF Berlin, co-organized les Cliniques Dramaturgiques of Short Theater Festival in Rome and intervenes in the cycle of modules dramaturgiques of la Bellone, Bruxelles.

Joris Lacoste  
Joris Lacoste has been writing for theater and radio since 1996 and has been directing his own performances and shows since 2003: 9 Lyriques pour une actrice et une caisse claire in 2005, Purgatoire in 2007, Le vrai spectacle in 2011. In 2004, he founded the collective research project W. He was an associate author at the Théâtre de la Colline in 2006-2007. From 2007 to 2009, he was co-director of the Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers. In 2007, he founded the collective Encyclopédie de la parole, within the framework of which were created the shows Parlement (2009), Suite n°1 (2013), Suite n°2 (2015), Suite n°3 (2017), Suite n°4 (2020), blablabla (2017) and Jukebox (2019). The performances of the Encyclopédie de la parole have been shown worldwide and were given a Portrait at the Festival d'Automne à Paris in 2020. Joris Lacoste has also created numerous performances and participated in several exhibitions in museums and art centers. He has also translated three plays by Shakespeare for the director Gwénaël Morin.
