Lot—the grass is fatter in Sodom is the last drama by János Térey. The play was written for Balázs Kovalik and the Örkény Theater. There is a Kierkegaard quote on the title page of the manuscript:
 
“If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable, insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?”  
The drama follows the biblical story of Lot.
 
“Lot”--Abraham’s nephew and business partner—moves to rich and fertile Sodom as a result of his constant rivalry with his uncle, despite the city’s morals deteriorating so notoriously. He strives at the same time to uphold his faith and the laws of his ancestors, while constantly making compromises in order to increase his wealth and maintain his position. One day, the angels of the Lord appear to him and let him know that the end has come. God has condemned the sinful city to destruction, but he and his family could be saved through Abraham. But they will have to leave everything behind and start their lives anew.
 
The play’s plot begins with the arrival of the angels. […] The story takes place today, the venue is a large European city that is very similar to Budapest. One of the main motives is exclusion, the impatience with which the city folk turn against strangers. In the figure of Lot, Térey drew a modern-day citizen whose faith is not strong enough and who simply does not want to choose between moral dictates and economic interest. The language of the play is both poetic and ordinary, sometimes philosophical, often socially critical. It contains many references to moral and political conditions in Hungary today.
